I once read an article written by a retired PHD-type that said “Grandparents should never spend money on their grandchildren.  It sent the wrong message to the child.”  That’s balony!  Grandparenting is a unique relationship in and of itself between grandparents and child.  It is based on love not money.  No matter what you give the child will feel and understand that deeper intent.

The amount you give to the grandchild is not important.  What is important is the love with which it is given.  Just having an involved and caring grandparent is a blessing in the life of the child and the family.  Sometimes monetary assistence can help the parents as well as the grandchild.

Giving should be based on the particular circumstance and on your personal resources.  It is certainly not a substitute for giving of yourself–your time, your involvement, and your love.  Those are the greatest gifts of all.
